Just the opposite. I think that the Chinese are not letting him out for fear that wither he might defect or he may say something more than they want him to say at a place where they have no control. He is just an academic and their is no reason for Canacks to refuse to let him in.

Thanks Gareth, I had heard there might be visa problems. Unbelievable, as if Dr. Chen (a very thoughtful and knowledgeable man in this field) can’t get into Canada. Unfortunate, I guess one must travel east to get his wisdom.

@prescient11: my understanding is that someone else, not Dr. Chen, gave the talk as there were visa issues. We are however in the process of obtaining a copy.

Hi Gareth, ABSOLUTELY. Just look at these numbers. It doesn’t make sense. Even if one takes for granted Dudley’s demand figures as accurate, the deficit is significant and only growing.

I want to see the Chinese spot domestic prices make a sharp move and then I think a very vicious round of M&A takes place in this sector and juniors are literally gobbled up.

Any chance that Jack was able to get a copy of Dr. Chen’s presentation? Has it been given yet?

China to “join the buy side” is a headline that should scare the living hell out of every REE end user immediately. Just buy a damn mine for $2B and rush it into production full blast. WR Grace would still be up $15B for the first year and then $17B after that!! Surplus material is pure gravy!!

@Tek: “selfish commercial interests” – are there any other type of such interests?! It was surely such interests that led to the present situation in which the USA does so little manufacturing these days, and is now beholden and China and others. I find it really quite ridiculous to hear so-called free-market proponents whining about the present situation…

China may well set the spot prices, and they will likely escalate. But I also think that the “selfish commercial interests” of whom Chen speaks, will be front and center to do anything and everything to capture, manipulate, and even harm the industry, if they can do so to their own benefit, regardless of the effects it might have on American or International businesses, or their nations’ economies.
