ED: there are significant opportunities for investing in the rare earths space, but of course as with all investments, whether you should or shouldn't invest depends on your own personal circumstances and your tolerance for risk.

Tek: at least one US-based permanent magnet manufacturer [Thomas & Skinner] has expressed interest in participating in the production of neodymium-based magnets, if the supply chain is set up by the Department of Defense, as would be required if the 2011 National Defense Authorization Act becomes law.

Volkhart: I don't have quantitative information on stockpiles, but will see if we can get at least some info on that.

Thanks for the excellent analysis; one more question: does anybody have an idea about inventory stocks build up in the last 4 to 5 years by big companies and may be state owned organisations as well?

Great followup Gareth. And it leads inevitably back to your area of expertise, magnets. I'm assuming that Arnold is still dancing with Moly, but who else in North America is most likely to cut in? And, are we maybe likely to see new magnet manufacturers associated with the new battery companies in the Midwest US? With GWTI producing specialty powders in the same area, it seems like a likely opportunity. Who knows, maybe Constantine K will bring Magnaquench back home?
