Aat Oskam: I don't disagree. As I implied in the interview, I think that ongoing accusations that China is manipulating the market, is something of a canard. It's also very naive. It amounts to blaming China for "allowing" Western companies to indulge in their grubbing around for more profits through lower costs, or for the disdain that companies in certain parts of the supply chain had for others elsewhere within it. China wasn't responsible for regulating the activities of these companies; their host nations were... and the truth hurts.

China is of course not snow-white in all of this but it's not like other countries were helpless - just as they are not helpless now. At the end of the day it's simply poor practice to have all of your resource eggs in one geographical basket.

I recommend folks read an article that Constantine Karayannopoulos, CEO of Neo Material Technologies, recently referred to elsewhere, on the myths and fables associates with this whole "big, bad China" routine. It tells the story of Magnequench, long accused of "selling out" to the Chinese, sifting through the nonsense that's been said about this company over the years. Check it out at:

Why accuse the Chinese of manipulating the market of Ree's?
It is the short-sightness of the political leaders in Europe, Japan and the US that they are in the position where they are now. They should have anticipated to this situation. Nobody made a complaint when prices were low due to the Chinese (illegal) miners, did they?
